DEMENTIA (ALZHEIMER’S)
MYTH :
Memory loss is a part of normal ageing
FACT :
Mild memory loss is a part of ageing, but when it starts causing problems in day to day functioning, then it might be a part of a disease called dementia
In dementia the brain matter keeps on shrinking
Dementia is a progressive illness, the symptoms keeps on increasing with time
Good thing about dementia is that if it is diagnosed early then it can be stopped there
But the problem is that very few people are aware about this problem
Patient generally presents to the doctor when the symptoms have already much worsened which includes :
- drastic memory loss,
- personality changes,
- sleep disturbance,
- not able to do own self care like eating, bathing, putting on clothes,
- frequently misplacing things,
- lack of initiative,
- difficulty communicating thoughts
In dementia, past events are generally retained in memory but recent memory is impaired like person forgets what he had in breakfast and other such recent events
There is no medication which can reverse the harm already done in dementia.
Medication is important as it stop its progression .
Few tips to manage dementia at home :
- As the saying goes for brain : use it or lose it
- Get busy in something you like doing
- Read books/ Newspaper
- Walk for atleast 20 min
- Avoid unhealthy food
- Keep blood sugar and blood pressure in control
- Make a to do list
- Keep a diary handy to write things you feel are important to remember
- Keep clocks, calenders in room
- Maintain sleep hygiene
- Learn new things
