family pressure of getting married to someone she doesn't like

In the last two weeks our therapists have answered 211 queries related to mental health.

General Query

i m engaged to a person i dont like...because of family pressure.after engagement i discovered this person is not right for me..he lies, he ignores,my priorities are not important to him..bt my family is asking me to get married and ignore evrything.as it will cause lot of insult to my parents if i break this engagement i tried to explain all the possible reasons and explanations to cancel this bt parents wants me to get married anyway.what should i do now?

Take a stand, if he is not right for you now then he is not right for you later. Its better to end this rather than getting hurt later

I agree with the above comment. Try to explain to your parents how this might get worse in the long run for everyone involved. And if the Union is to be called off, better now than a few years later. Plus, lying and not prioritising your partner are big things; it's not like you want to break this off on a whim. I hope your parents put your happiness and wellbeing over societal pressure to not call this engagement off. Take care!

Hey! I am sure this sutuation must be really difficult to deal with. All of us wants a partner who understands us. This is something that can’t be ignored. Have tried siting with your parents and explain to them with all the reason why you don’t want to go ahead with this marriage. Try to tell them that it’s a matter of life you cannot ignore such things and they should focus on giving you a happy life not consider what people will say. Because eventually it’s your life. Be assertive and sure about what you want. And then let us know how it worked out?

i did that..i tried to explain everything to them..n now engagement got cancelled...bt they all are blaming me for tge insult..nobody is pointing towards the boy..who was lying n cheating..

See these things come along in our society. What we have to know is that we are safe from the situation that could have happened. People will eventually understand when you will have confidence and know what to do in your life. Be assertive and determined.

thanx dear....i m happy that i have saved myself from that person...i know i have to be strong..my parents are not supporting me..they are under societal pressure..i knkw that...i have insulted them..i didnt had any other option left except cancelling this engagement..
