Look. I'm not a better judge of this but I know this if anyone say that you're special just feel it and move on. Maybe they said it for the time or to just fast closure of conversation. It "maybe" 10,000 many things but what you need to understand. The special being comes from inside. So,
First of all, keep you happiness based on what you do.
Second, don't rely on emotions to give you direction but feel them as they're made for
Third, maybe the person in front is just saying that but did you gave an extra effort on your front.
