Stagnant in career

In the last two weeks our therapists have answered 211 queries related to mental health.

I've been working at the same job for 5 years but haven't gotten a single promotion and because of this whenever I interview for other jobs it leaves a bad impression. Hence I'm trapped in same position that doesn't even pay that well. I became an engineer only because my parents wanted me to so I don't particularly like my job as it is and now I can't even grow in life. I see all my friends from back in school and college progress so much whereas I have achieved nothing and wasted so many years of my life.

Hey, If you do not like your job then it might be a reason why your employers don't think your passionate enough to get promoted. Also a promotion is only going to increase your workload, not make you like your job any better. Maybe try your hand at a slightly different kind of career that still relates to your degree but has different settings. It could help you break the stagnancy and find out something you actually enjoy doing.

How about you approach your boss in a pleasant manner and ask him the reason behind your lack of growth in the position? It could clear out your doubts and potentially teach you what you need to do going forward
